WHY SO SERIOUS?

“The tendency of our childish nature is to take small things too seriously and get easily offended, whereas when we are confronted with situations that have long-term consequences, we tend to take things less seriously.” – Dalai Lama

Let us celebrate life (in full color!), move past the small stuff, and look after those serious matters which require our attention with due diligence.

KEEP IT MOVING!

We are only limited by our own creativity…even in exercise! Finding your preferred way to keeping your body moving is so important.

Not only does exercise control your weight, it improves your mood and your health! Regular exercise also boosts your energy and promotes better sleep…among many other benefits.

You can go walking, running, biking, climbing, dancing, surfing, swimming, or play a sport. Yoga, T’ai Chi, and Qi Gong are all methods to benefit your mind and body even more directly. When you get bored, simply try something new!

The key is to keep it moving! Every day ;)

SAGE ADVICE: MEAN GIRL

DEAR SAGE: There is this girl in my grade and she is so mean to me! She talks behind my back, she laughs at whatever I do! When I saw her at pinkberry a frozen yogurt place she acted so nice because my mom was there.  She is so popular so everybody likes her. Now she turned everybody against me. What should I do?

DEAR NICE GIRL: I am sorry to hear this! Unfortunately, this type of situation can happen all throughout life because the girl you describe is probably very unhappy. Because she is not happy with herself, she tries to make you miserable too. You may never understand why she is unhappy and treating you poorly, but that is okay. What you can control is how you react to her.

My advice is that the best thing you can do is to smile when she laughs at you and simply walk away. Don’t let her actions control you! Bullies may have some attention for a while, but eventually, people will want to spend their time with someone who is nicer. So you should focus on being your wonderful self and not worry about this mean girl!

COMMON SPIRIT

All living things have a spirit. Created by our Creator, we share a bond with all things living.

One fully understood rule about wild animals is that you do not mess with a cub unless you want to face the full wrath of the mother.

If we do not protect our children, who will?

PHARAOH NEFERTITI

Perhaps one of the best known Egyptian queens [and a personal favorite] is Nefertiti, meaning, “the beautiful one has come”.

Known for her great beauty, Queen Nefertiti was married to Pharaoh Amenhotep IV [who later changed his name to Akhenaten], and ruled by his side. Together, Nefertiti and Akhenaten, are most known for establishing Aten [the Sun] as the sole deity…a dramatic departure from the traditional polytheistic beliefs of the Egyptians. The two were depicted riding in chariots together and even kissing, suggesting a genuine romantic connection.

Nefertiti is thought to be one of the most powerful women who ever ruled, and her husband went to great lengths to display her as an equal counterpart in artistic depictions of the time. Queen Nefertiti is shown wearing the crown of the pharaoh and even smiting enemies in battle, illustrating her great power.

M. C. ESCHER

Maurits Cornelis Escher (1892 – 1972) was a brilliant graphic artist. Known for mind-bending [and sometimes headache inducing!] structures, Escher’s art spanned lithographic prints, woodcuts and wood engraving. He produced thousands of drawings and sketches and has left an inspirational body of work which continues to confound and delight.

Escher decided to bypass his original study of architecture and pursue graphic art instead. Perhaps Gaudi was inspired to follow the opposite path :)

CHILL OUT: THE TAOIST WAY

Taoism is all about going with the flow of life and enjoying the journey. It is about contentment [loving things as they are] and freedom to be as you are. No changes required.

Taoism is based on the concept of wei wu wei, which means action without action. Just as we breathe without actively trying or as the planets orbit around the sun on their own, wei wu wei is about being so true to yourself that you live in a natural state and stop forcing things. You do what you love (in harmony with nature), take things [and people] as they are, and keep moving.

Lao-tzu is seen as the father of Taoism [and author of the timeless Tao Te Ching]. If one were to ask Lao-tzu, “Why are you happy?” he would say, “Rather than asking why I am happy, inquire why you are not.” Happiness is the natural state. Similarly, you do not go to the doctor to understand why you are healthy…that is how you should be.

One of the most famous lines of the Tao Te Ching is, “The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” Taoism encourages us to live our life like this…one step at at time…enjoying each step.

TURN IT UPSIDE DOWN

“Who’s to say what’s impossible and can’t be found?”

It is so important to understand those things in life that thrill you! Finding your fun and going out and doing it is where joy is found.

Even better, when you can find a way to do what you love for a living, it won’t feel like work!

So, turn your mindset upside down and go live your dreams! ;)
