I LET IT GO

The following is a true story about Nelson Mandela, as told by Former US President Bill Clinton:

“That was pretty smart of you to have your jailers come to the Inauguration and all of that, but let me ask you something… didn’t you really hate them for what they did?”

Nelson replied…

“Oh, yeah, I hated them for a long time. I stayed alive on hate for 12 years. I broke rocks every day, and I stayed alive on hate. They took a lot away from me. They took me away from my wife, and it subsequently destroyed my marriage. They took me away from seeing my children grow up. They abused me mentally and physically. And one day, I realized they could take it all except my mind and my heart.”

He paused and then he continued…

“Those things I would have to give to them, and I simply decided not to give them away.”

And so I said to Nelson…

“Well, what about when you were getting out of prison? The day you got out of prison in 1990, it was Sunday morning, and I got my daughter up early in the morning, and I took her down to the kitchen, and I turned on the television, and she was just a little girl then, and I sat her up on the kitchen counter. And I said, ‘Chelsea, I want you to watch this. This is one of the most important things you’ll ever see in your life.'”

“I watched you walk down that dirt road to freedom. Now, when you were walking down there, and you realized how long you had been in their prison, didn’t you hate them then? Didn’t you feel some hatred?”

Nelson replied…

“Yes, I did a little bit. I felt that. And frankly, I was kind of afraid, too, because I hadn’t been free in so long. As I felt the anger rising up, I thought to myself, ‘Nelson, They have already had you for 27 years. And if you keep hating them, they’ll have you again.’ And I said myself, ‘I want to be free.’

And so I let it go. I let it go.”

HOW THEN CAN WE ARGUE?

Having lunch in a field one day, I troubled an ant with a question. I asked of him humbly,

“Have you ever been to Paris?”

And he replied, “No, but I wouldn’t mind going.” And then he asked me if I had ever been to a famous ant city. And I regretted that I hadn’t, and was quick to add, “I wouldn’t mind, too!”

This lead to a conclusion: There is life that we do not know of.

How aware are we of all consciousness

in this universe?

What percent of space is this earth in the infinite realm?

What percent of time is one second in eternity?

Less that that is our

knowledge of

God.

How then can we ever argue about

Him?

CRAZY TALK

Lately I’ve been exploring the concept of “oneness” and what it means. I considered that perhaps we are all different manifestations of the same Spirit having a complete human experience in different bodily forms (at the same time).

To expand on that…yesterday, I had an emotion breakdown//breakthrough when I was driving around (a bit lost, even with GPS) in San Jose and saw a ‘mentally ill’ person talking to themselves on the side of the highway. I started crying then (and now) because I saw myself in that person. I saw the person I become whenever I’m struggling with a decision or going back and forth about something in my mind. I saw the person I can be when I hold on to something too long and resist change.

And in all of that, I had another realization that the Spirit uses different bodily forms to also experience the range of the human emotional//cognitive spectrum. That is to say that if we look at the range of emotions from despair to elation that we can all experience on an individual level, there is a person representing each and every one of those emotions across the spectrum completely in any given moment.

From a cognitive perspective, we can consider the range of mentally undeveloped to genius level…this is a range that we may grow through during our lifetime as the brain develops. And as with the emotional spectrum, I also consider that there is an individual person representing each part of that range as well.

We are all different in that we are given unique gifts…and unique physical//emotional//cognitive ‘identities.’ As we live our individual selves, we are actually representing a piece of the range in this spectrum.

We don’t get to make a retro-active decision about what color we are born…or what gender…or what height we will be. Similarly, we don’t have a retro-active say in what our innate emotional and cognitive identity and potential will be.

However, through the process of individual growth and decision making there are some areas we may modify: we can impact our weight through exercise//dietary choices (generally speaking, as there are some with hormonal influences which may cause weight determination to be outside of their control). We can tattoo our body to effectively change the color of our skin. We can determine our emotional response to internal and external stimuli  (again, generally, as there may be some with mental ‘illness’ which may cause emotional regulation to be outside of their control). And we can enhance our cognitive abilities by learning more about the world around us (and within us)…and then experience real transformation when we question everything we ‘know’ (though there are some with cognitive ‘disabilities’ who may not be able to have this same experience).

Underneath all of that is the same Spirit. I think we tap into that Source when we have empathy for others and express compassion as we extend kindness. We understand that others are living another piece of our experience…including the good, bad, and shockingly ugly parts that we may have the potential to live, but our unique physical//emotional//cognitive (in sum, spiritual) construction keeps us outside of that range. In extending kindness in the ugliest of circumstances (though it may seem impossible in some extreme cases), I think we are recognizing our potential to be in that same place. That is the oneness that connects us all to the Creator responsible for us being here.

This all goes beyond right and wrong and simply considers the Source at the root of it all.

LIVING IN HEAVEN

This morning I was inspired by this beautiful photo and reminded that each day we have an opportunity to live in the peace of Heaven…while on Earth. This happens through our thoughts and how we choose to experience our inner and outer worlds.

Natural beauty is all around us to serve as a reminder of the Light and the awesome power of the Creator. However, the duality of nature insists that there be Darkness as well, for we cannot have Light without Darkness. In fact, Darkness helps us to understand Light.

Though both must exist, we also have a choice about what space we chose to live in during every moment.

On my best days, I find that I’m choosing to see the beauty of everything. And I’m so awe-inspired by the beauty of nature that I understand my “problem” is insignificant. I understand that our Creator will always make a way. I see this as living in the Light.

May peace be with you! :)

CREATING STORMS

Recently, I was introduced to the experiments of Japanese scientist Masaru Emoto. His work postulates human consciousness has an effect on the molecular structure of water. Emoto conducted experiments by exposing water to both positive and negative influences (or simply taping words with positive, negative connotation to the container of water), and observing the crystalized form. Photographs were taken to show the structure of the water, and the water exposed to positivity was symmetrical (and beautiful…symmetry tends to be nature’s definition of beauty), while the negatively influenced water was rather chaotic.

Whether one believes his experiments or not, the findings are interesting. Our bodies are mostly water, and although I believe that true peace is achieved without being influenced by the words and actions of others, I also believe that words have power. A kind word can lift us, while negative criticism can deflate us, even if only temporarily.

Especially given that my favorite superhero is Storm, recent conversations with friends have led me to consider that perhaps the negative energy we are creating in the world is causing superstorms.

Our planet is a closed loop, so the negativity, hate, greed, and jealously being expressed by individuals could be joining and coming back at us in the form of these massive storms (which often contain only wind and water). Let’s think about it…where else would this energy go?

In the same vein, I believe that the power of love is strongest. Fortunately, we are also sharing love in this world, and I see it reflected in beautiful sunsets, clear skies, and waterfalls. :)

The key is to have an awareness of the kind of energy we are sharing. A storm could be brewing over our homes, but a little light and a strong wind can dissipate the grayest sky. :)

Dedicated to all those who have suffered from storms past, present, and future…with heartfelt hopes that we, as a people, will actively choose to spread more love.

TRYING ON CLOTHES

What if the Spirit (oneness) is just trying on ‘clothes’ (in the form of bodies) all at the same time?

Along these same lines, to be attached to what happens with the body is like becoming fixated with a drop of ink on a shirt…

Just something to think about ;)

SELF HEALING

I’ve used the analogy of breathing before to illustrate that our body knows how to function on it’s own without interference. But a recent cut reminded me of how the body also knows how to heal itself.

Without having to do anything more than use an anti-biotic to prevent infection, I watched a cut on my arm go from a red gash to a minor blemish that is barely noticeable. I didn’t think about it or worry about it, I simply let my body heal itself.

In the same way, I considered different pains that we experience in life. When we say a prayer, cry, or do whatever we can to peacefully apply anti-biotic to the pain we may experience in life (so that it won’t infect us and our relationships), we have to also understand that the higher powers in the universe (God, the Creator, or however you wish to see it) will step in to do the rest. We don’t really have to do anything except let it go.

Though the passage of time can seem painfully slow, eventually we will come to a place where the previous pain is barely noticeable if we stop focusing on it. We also have to stop believing the stories we tell ourselves about the pain which only reinforces it.

We just can’t spend our lives re-attaching ourselves to the pain of the initial hurt — whatever it may be. Letting go means letting the natural healing occur. If a memory of the pain filters through our minds, we choose to question if it is even real or true and decide to become a different person without the belief in that thought. As Byron Katie reminds us, something becomes a fact only when we believe it.

Through living our lives and doing whatever it is we need to do in each present moment, without worry and attaching ourselves to that previous pain, we allow ourselves to be healed. The only moment we have is now.

We know we are fully healed when we forgive and move on. We decide to be responsible for the choices we are making and not lay blame on anyone else.

We become free of past hurts and move forward with a clean slate…everything is washed away…we have a new day.
